San Mateo Celebrates is a weeklong National Library Week festival (April 18–25), featuring free events at the Main Library and outreach across the city. We’re looking for friendly, reliable volunteers to help create a welcoming, well-run experience for all.
Volunteers needed: 4–5 (one per major event)
Where: Hybrid (pre-event onboarding + on-site during event)
Overview:
We are seeking volunteers with event planning or production experience to serve as Event Captains for San Mateo Celebrates. This role supports both pre-event coordination and on-site execution, working closely with staff to ensure each event runs smoothly.
Time Commitment:
Onboarding: 1–2 weeks prior to festival (1–2 planning touchpoints)
Event Week: On-site support during assigned event (approx. 4–6 hours)
Duties:
Participate in pre-event briefing and review run-of-show
Serve as on-site lead for assigned event
Coordinate and direct volunteers (check-in, ushers, setup, etc.)
Troubleshoot issues in real time and escalate as needed
Help ensure timeline adherence and overall guest experience
Preferred Skills:
Prior experience in event planning, production, or hospitality
Strong communication and decision-making skills
Comfortable leading small teams in a live environment
